Winners: Top Five Feminist Blogs

Below are the winners of the Loosefemme Feminist Blog Contest.  My reason for doing this contest was to educate myself about feminist blogs.  I also fulfilled my sick need to compare myself to other bloggers.

I didn’t find anyone doing what I’m doing. I looked at dozens of blogs, could have viewed dozens more but had to save the eyes.

List is one hundred percent subjective, feel free to suggest other feminist blogs. Number One is a hard-boiled, genuine Texas blogger. I am picky about my humor. So give ‘I Blame the Patriarchy’ a spin.  I also gave preference to blogs inclusive of queer issues, or dyke-positive blogs.

My heartfelt congratulations to each of the winners.

Winners

  1. http://blog.iblamethepatriarchy.com/ I’m giddy over “Spinster Aunt” Twisty Faster’s anti-patriarchal aeronautics.  With side-splitting hilarity and awe-inspiring vocabulary she skewers TV, medicine and politics.  There’s a crunchy feminist reading list.  Resisting the urge to quote at length, I leave you with her immortal instruction:  “Google ‘mansplaining’ before commenting here.”
  2. http://www.ihollaback.org/Hollaback! is a movement dedicated to ending street harassment using mobile technology.  Sexual harassment is a gateway crime that creates a cultural environment that makes gender-based violence OK.”  Hollaback posts videos and stories of women “holla’ing back” to street harassers.  A cool ‘crowd-sourced’ fix for a daily headache faced by women and LGBTs.
  3. http://jezebel.com/ has attitude.  A top story, “Fuck You, 2010″ said, “MY FAVORITE TAMPONS WERE DISCONTINUED.” A bad year indeed.  Other features include, “The Year’s Top Weight Stories,” and “The Best of the Worst Photoshops of 2010.”
  4. http://www.bookslut.com/blog/ is a necessity if you’re a book slut like me.  Author interviews and book reviews.  Few surprises but  comprehensive.  See the Best Books of 2010 list.
  5. http://sirensmag.com/ is a blog, or it’s a magazine “addressing the things that matter to modern, informed, feminist women—from the superficial to the serious—in a way that truly speaks to the smart-and-savvy “fairer” sex.”  Articles range from masturbation to body image to feminist TV shows; above-average writing.

Honorable Mention

  1. http://www.thefword.org.uk/index, dedicated to contemporary UK feminism.  Long list of contributors, many published authors.  A  formal feel. See the series on women in the history of British Punk by Cazz Blase, with rare videos of female punk bands.
  2. http://hoydenabouttown.com/ “A mixed bag of uppity women blogging from Australia.”  Science, culture, politics. See the “Gender and Feminism” section.
  3. http://theangryblackwoman.com/ She’s black, she’s angry and she holds forth on race, gender, politics and sexuality.  Sample categories:  Ain’t I a Woman; Things You Need to Understand.
  4. http://www.packaginggirlhood.typepad.com/ “Rescuing our daughters from marketer’s schemes.”  Parental action to protect girls from predatory advertising and pernicious memes.
  5. http://thefbomb.org/ A blog created for teenage feminists by 17-year old Julie Zeilinger.  You go girls!
